Litigation is legal proceedings between opposing parties aimed at enforcing or defending a legal right. Litigation is usually settled through an agreement between the parties. However a jury or judge in court may hear the dispute and make a decision on it. Litigation isn’t just another name that refers to a lawsuit. It includes all the activities that take place before, during, and after the lawsuit aimed at enforcing legal rights. That includes pre-suit negotiations, arbitrations, appeals and facilitation.
A litigator is a person that specializes in handling legal action taken against people and organizations. They handle the entire case. That includes the investigation, discovery, pleadings, pre-trial, trial, settlement and appeal. Advocating for the client is the ethical and legal obligation of the litigator. Litigators work in many different venues. They include legal services clinics and small or large law firms. To became a litigator one must complete an undergraduate degree, a Juris Doctor and then pass the state bar exam.
They must also have superior verbal and written communication skills, knowledge of legal software and the ability to do analysis, legal research, multitasking, critical thinking, and attention to detail. Litigators must also be honest and responsible.
Karl Heideck is an experienced litigation attorney. He has been practicing law in the Philadelphia area and Jenkintown, Pennsylvania for the past 8 years. Since April 2015 he has been a hire counsel with Pepper Hamilton LLP. His areas of specialization include compliance and risk management review. Karl Heideck also has a wide range of experience in corporate law, employment law, commercial litigation, legal writing, legal research, mediation, arbitration and intellectual property. Heideck earned a B.A. in English Language and Literature from Swarthmore College and a Juris Doctor from the Beasley School of Law at Temple University.
Over the past 8 years Heideck has amassed a great deal of experience in litigation and many other areas of law. He’s handled complex commercial litigation as well as cases dealing with banking and subprime litigation. Heideck has worked with the Montgomery County District Attorney as a certified legal intern. While there he assisted the ADAs with the pre-trial division with hearings, preparation and conducting research for a homicide trial. Heideck was also a project associate for Pepper Hamilton before being hired by the firm. One important role he played for the firm was to help review client documents during the discovery period in a major pharmaceutical litigation.
