Despite a recent foundation in 2007, Rocketship education currently operates 20 schools in three states and in the District of Columbia. The nonprofit has dedicated its self to eradicating the achievement gap in our generation. They believe that this difficult undertaking is best accomplished by the development of a sustainable system that addresses the needs of impoverished communities. They believe in the potential of every student to achieve their goals and work hard to provide the foundation necessary for them to succeed. They believe that an excellent education is the right of every American and the framework to a better society.
Supporting students has been proven to be the essential to their success. Having teachers capable of understanding their needs as well as attentive parents guiding studying practices greatly influences performance. Instructors hired by Rocketship Education are required to conduct in-home meetings with parents before the school year begins. In this meeting, they lay the groundwork for a quality school year by conveying expectations and providing resources for parents to utilize while helping students. Students are encouraged to take what they’ve learned in the classroom and continue it in the living room. In addition to reinforcing what they’ve learned it also helps parents keep on track with how their child is progressing. Parents are encouraged to stay in contact with teachers so that adjustments can be made as needed.
These connections go beyond the learning environment as well. When a river overflowed causing massive flooding in the San Jose Area many students and their families were affected. Teachers from Rocketship Education quickly began gathering supplies on their own to distribute. They cooked hot meals for victims as well as proving whatever replacement clothing or necessities they could. However, the school knew it should do more. They contacted local charities asking for aid in raising relief funds. Thankful, their efforts were fruitful and they were able to raise over $60,000 for the families of their rocketeers. Gratitude flowed from the community while some were surprised that the school contributed so much to their recovery others always knew that they could count on Rocketship Education to support them.
