An article that ran in the July 11, 2017, edition of U.S.A. Today suggested that coffee consumption can reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other catastrophic medical conditions. The information contained in the piece was taken from
the American College of Physicians’ medical journal “The Annals of Internal Medicine”.
Associate Professor of Preventive Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California Veronica W. Setiawan is the studies lead author. Setiawan’s team studied 185,000 Americans over a 16 year period.
The studies findings suggested that the healthful benefits of coffee drinking crosses ethnic and racial lines. The portion of the participants who are coffee drinkers reported having 2-3 cups of coffee a day. Among that group, the chances of dying from certain diseases were 18% lower as compared to non-coffee drinkers.
A similar study encompassed 520,000 people from 10 European nations. The findings of that study mirrored those of the “The Annals of Internal Medicine” study.
Neither study proved conclusively what active ingredient or ingredients are responsible for coffee’s healthful properties.
